The care of abandoned, abused, neglected, orphaned or homeless children; or any other vulnerable or needy children, including those affected or infected by HIV/AIDS. This includes the provision of transitional and/or long-term residential care (children’s foster homes), supportive reintegration with families/caregivers and follow-up support for children and caregivers. In cooperation with social welfare, community and other relevant organisations; Vukukhanye aims to promote family stability and improve the social environment of children within its area of operation (presently the Durban region of KwaZulu-Natal and the Ndlambe district of the Eastern Cape).
Vukukhanye was birthed primarily in response to the need to provide care and support for the increasing number of children orphaned due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
A Children's Foster/Transition Home (situated in Berea West, Westville; near the border of Chesterville) was started in 2002. This Home has cared for 46 children to date, and there are presently 11 children living at the Home. Vukukhanye also provides follow-up support for children and caregivers and supports vulnerable families in underprivileged communities.
