YOUTH EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

Tertiary Education Bursary Project – Chesterville Secondary School

In cooperation with Chesterville High School, Vukukhanye has initiated a Bursary project to facilitate tertiary education for deserving, disadvantaged learners.

The aim of the project is to contribute towards the ability of disadvantaged individuals from Chesterville Secondary School to achieve tertiary educational qualifications; by providing an incentive for high school achievement and by providing the necessary financial support, as well as mentoring and associated support, to deserving individuals. In this way it is hoped to contribute to the socio-economic development of Chesterville.

The initial goal is to award two (2) new bursaries in the first year of the bursary programme (2009 academic year) and a further 8 new bursaries from 2010-2013, at a rate of two new bursaries per year.

School Partnership Project – Chesterville Secondary School

Vukukhanye has initiated a ‘School Partnership Project’ with Chesterville Secondary School, in order to improve the learning environment and to support the initiatives of the school management to ensure education delivery.

The Programme has the following specific objectives:

To create an environment which encourages in the learner a desire to learn.

To establish a civic pride in the learner

To provide support to the School Governing Body (SGB) in the form of the specific skills to assist in managing the schools affairs.

The Programme consists of the following intended activities:

Properly maintain the schools grounds and buildings.

Support and transfer skills to existing SGB members where needed.

To establish sports and other events with other local schools to develop relationships between the schools.

Support initiatives of the school management, which will assist with their current teaching programme.

After-School Sport Project

Rationale

Sport is a fundament part of a child’s education and a busy sports schedule in the afternoon after school promotes a health body, provides a supervised environment for children who may otherwise become involved in crime and other damaging activities.

Sport For All

Sport For All Franchising (Pty) Ltd is South Africa’s first social franchise, which is devoted to community development in previously disadvantaged areas. Sport For All utilises sport as a tool for development by implementing their sustainable franchise model in beneficiary communities. A Sport For All Franchise not only provides the children of the community with access to sport and a trusted safe environment to go to after school, it creates employment, and a sustainable black owned business.

Objectives

> Sport and Coaching Skills

The program provides training for coaches thereby empowering unemployed young adults as well as providing sport skills across the various sporting codes to the children.

> Life Skills

The program provides a fantastic platform to impart life skills to children outside of the formalised classroom environment. Experience has shown that the children view the coaches as role models and parent figures, which provides the opportunity for the coaches to deliver life skills to the children. A number of Life Skills modules will be included in the program.
