TRAINING & PREVENTION

Training Programmes

Vukukhanye has three years' experience in the implementation of an HIV/AIDS training and support programme, which is based on the manual 'Quality Living with HIV - a toolkit for care providers' (Coutsoudis & Thomas 2004). The programme  focuses on facilitating the empowerment and improved quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS. It has been tested by HPP in two hospitals in KZN since 2002; has reached more than 2000 antenatal attendees and over 400 individuals; and outcomes reflect its effectiveness in facilitating positive behavior change. The manual has been translated into and printed in Zulu. After completion of the training course, including practical experience; these trained counsellors will be able to facilitate training/support groups in their communities. The groups can then be multiplied within the target population through the training of previous group members to themselves become counsellors/group-leaders.

To date forty delegates from communities in the Ethekwini Metro have received training. Vukukhanye has also had experience in collaberating with partner organisations in the implementation of a school based HIV prevention programme.

Chesterville High School

In August 2006 Vukukhanye, Westville Christian Fellowship and Crossroads collaborated in a one-week abstinence and character-based HIV/AIDS education programme in Chesterville High School. Weekly training was provided at the school for a period, following the positive feedback, and on request from the school.

Chesterville Satellite Hospice

Vukukhanye has had a close working relationship with the Chesterville Satellite Hospice for a number of years. The Hospice provides nursing care, counselling and home-based palliative care for terminally ill patients, especially those living with HIV/AIDS. Twice a week patients are collected from their homes and transported to the Hospice where they engage in craft-work, are provided with meals, counselling, nursing care and associated support as required. Vukukhanye provides support to the Hospice in the form of food, clothing, blankets and other supplies and facilitates the implementation of the 'Quality Living with HIV' training programme in Chesterville by the Hospice counsellors.
